Differences Between a Layer 2 Switch and a Layer 3 Switch
The main difference between a Layer 2 switch and a Layer 3 switch lies in the network layers they operate at. Layer 2 switches function at the data link layer, while Layer 3 switches operate at the network layer.
Layer 2 Switch
A Layer 2 switch makes forwarding decisions based on MAC addresses. It is primarily used for creating separate collision domains and connecting multiple devices within the same network segment.
Layer 3 Switch
On the other hand, a Layer 3 switch can make routing decisions based on IP addresses. It combines the functionalities of a switch and a router, allowing for more efficient traffic routing within a network.
When to Use Each
Use a Layer 2 switch when you need to establish network segmentation and improve network performance within a single subnet. Layer 2 switches are ideal for local area networks (LANs).
Opt for a Layer 3 switch when you require inter-VLAN routing or need to route traffic between different subnets. Layer 3 switches are suitable for larger networks with multiple VLANs and complex routing needs.
